Karower African Mother Group

About our group: We are over 55 African women (with children) from different countries. We need support to cope with the daily demands of authorities, important appointments, e.g. job centers and immigration authorities, and clarifying misunderstandings in the neighborhood. The project makes an important contribution to integration here in the Karow district in the sense of: exchanging information, combined with a weekly meeting as a shared breakfast for African mothers, where experts are also occasionally invited in a safe space. An important community of African mothers was formed in 2020, which has remained intact throughout the Corona years.

Offers: - Meetings, exchange of Information and activities with children - Support is offered for language and mentality differences at appointments at school, daycare, doctor or authorities. - Translation from English, Twi to German - Pre-integration measures as a lecture and workshop:

1. Application of essential mentality differences in mutual interaction

2. What is racism and how can I deal with the situation?

6 Jul 2024 — Adolphine Landgraf was one of the first to come here four years ago to join the "Karower African Mommies" project.

Safe space for exchanging ideas about everyday racism "My neighbors never greeted me, never accepted packages. They deliberately looked away when I passed by," says Adolphine Landgraf, who has lived in Karow since 2017. "But I just kept saying hello. Today we talk to each other and offer each other help." Racism in everyday life - each of the women here has a story to tell about it. From derogatory comments to taped-up mailboxes. They can talk about it in the community center - a safe space. But the community center where the project is housed is not just a contact point for Nana, Adolphine and the other mothers. It is a meeting place for senior citizens, there are sewing and gymnastics courses, pension advice, but also advice for migrants who are new to Karow. Three projects share the premises, which was originally a three-room ground floor apartment.
